Five Experiences to Try this Winter

Ice Driving

Banish any fear you might have of driving in adverse winter conditions, and take a class at the Bridgestone Winter Driving School. Get behind the Wheel and Learn to Navigate slick corners and ice-covered tracks and under the guidance of a professional instructor. Classes are geared to drivers of all levels, from the novice to a Formula One champ.

Powdercat Skiing

Ever wished you could ski or ride first tracks all day long? You can when you spend a day exploring the backcountry on Buffalo Pass with Steamboat Powdercats. Ride uphill in a snowcat, listen to the guide’s advice, then make your own mark on untouched power. Skiers need to be intermediate level and above.

Fat Biking

Snow on the ground doesn’t have to put the brakes on biking for the winter. Steamboat cyclists have embraced the fat bike craze where wide, large tread wheels cruise over the crust and roll easily on snow-covered trails. Howelsen Hill and Catamount Touring Center offers bikes for rent and plenty of terrains to try.

Ice Fishing

A thick layer of ice on the lake doesn’t seem to deter the ardent fisherman. Wrap up warmly and head 17 miles south of Steamboat to Stagecoach Reservoir, where ice-fishing equipment is available for rent.

Ski Jumping

Follow in the ski books of Steamboat’s long list of Nordic Olympians and try ski Jumping at Howelsen Hill. Kids age 13 and under can sign up for free at the Hithcen Brothers Wednesday Night Jump Series. Ages 16 and over can participate in additional Wednesday jump nights for a fee. On Ski for Free Sundays, Coaches are on hand to help would-be jumpers of all ages catch some air.
