The Steamboat Marathon is a well-loved annual event in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The 2024 race is set to be held on Tuesday, June 2nd for the 43rd edition of the festivities. Participants will run alongside the Elk River and will have plenty of extraordinary views of the Rocky Mountains along the route. This race is a certified Boston Marathon qualifier and has been ranked as one of the top destination marathons in North America! Runners from all over the country come to Steamboat Springs for the opportunity to participate in this one-of-a-kind experience.

Participants can choose between the full marathon, the half-marathon, and a 10K — with registration fees priced at $140, $120, and $70. The half marathon and 10K are open to runners 11 and up and the full marathon is segmented off for runners who are 18 and up. Not a runner? Not a problem! This race is a blast to spectate as well, so come on out to cheer on local community members as well as athletes from around the country as they take on this bucket list challenge.

* Keep an eye out for The Group’s aid station at the Steamboat Marathon! We’re looking forward to supporting the runners and cheering them on to the finish line.

Memorial Day Sidewalk Sales

Where? Downtown Steamboat Springs

Kicking off on Monday, May 24th, the Memorial Day Sidewalk Sales will be brought to downtown Steamboat Springs. This is the perfect opportunity to shop for new arrivals just in time for the warmer weather. The event is recurring daily until Thursday, May 27th. Whether you’re in search of authentic Western attire, a  summer closet refresh, or outdoor apparel for all of your hiking, climbing, and biking activities — there’s something for everyone! Search for unique gifts and even peruse the local fine art galleries to see if something catches your eye. Kiddos will love the sales as well, with plenty of candy and ice cream, as well as bookstores and craft stores to add to the shopping spree.

If you missed the boat for the Memorial Day sales, no need to fret! Sidewalk sales are a Steamboat Springs signature event and are held three times throughout the year — on the 3rd weekend in March, Memorial Day weekend, and Labor Day weekend. Mark your calendars for Labor Day to catch the next batch of unbelievable deals.

Yoga on the Green

Where? 1000 Pamela Lane

Looking to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and meet some new friendly faces? Yoga on the Green is held weekly at the Yampa River Botanic Park on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM throughout the summer. Whether you’re new to yoga or you’ve been practicing for years, this event is truly one of a kind. Attendees will enjoy the natural beauty of the gardens and the serene pond that provides an unmatched ambiance to these classes.

To participate, simply bring a mat or a towel, as well as water, sunscreen, and bug spray! Parking can be limited, so organizers ask participants to walk, bike, or carpool whenever possible. The event is free, though a $10 donation is encouraged to ensure this activity can keep operating and provide the community with the chance to relax, unwind, and enjoy outdoor socialization. Funds go back to the Botanic Park, as well as to compensate the instructors.

RCSAR Family Fun Day

Where? 845 Howelsen Parkway

The Routt County Search and Rescue is excited to host their annual family fun day on Saturday, June 1st. This event is designed to share educational information, as well as show children the RCSAR equipment, trucks, ATVs, and some of the group’s first aid practices. As always, the family fun day is free to attend and will be held in Howelsen Park. Bring the whole family out to enjoy free hot dogs and snacks. If the weather permits, attendees will be able to watch the Classic Air Medical land a helicopter on the field during the event.

This event isn’t organized to be a fundraiser. Instead, the “fun day” is meant to be just that — an opportunity for RCSAR to show their appreciation for their community’s support. Routt County Search and Rescue performs backcountry searches and rescues throughout the county, which is made possible by a group of volunteers who stay on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

Yampa River Festival

Where? 1795 Fetcher Park Drive

The 2024 Yampa River Festival will mark the 44th year of this beloved flagship event hosted by Friends of the Yampa. This signature festival began in 1980 to raise awareness of the Yampa River and is held each year on the weekend after Memorial Day — typically coinciding with the Steamboat Marathon. In the past few decades, the Yampa River Festival has evolved to include an array of recreational events, as well as fundraisers, parties, and even speaker functions.

Whether you kayak, tube, canoe, raft, SUP, or otherwise float down the river — the festival is open to a diverse range of participants. If you don’t want to jump in the water, no problem! There are plenty of ways to spectate and enjoy a cold drink, tasty food, and cheer on those making their way down the river. This year, the festival kicks off on May 30th and runs through June 2nd. Most festival events will take place between Fetcher Park and Charlie’s Hole, such as the Raft Rodeo and the SUP Cross.

Community Clean-Up Day

Where? 135 6th Street

If you’re looking for an opportunity to get outside and do something good for the local community, consider participating in the annual community clean-up day on May 18th. Participants will meet in the community room at the Routt County DHS building at 8:00 AM and will be assigned to a 1-mile stretch in a team of 2 to 4 volunteers. Bags and safety vests are provided but organizers encourage community members to bring water bottles, garden gloves, and a good attitude! That’s not all — participants will also be gifted with a gift card for lunch for their time and hard work.

Dressing for the elements is encouraged, as this event takes place rain or shine. Wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen, as well as a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself against the sun. Volunteers will be tasked with picking up litter and removing stickers, old posters and advertisements from the downtown area of Steamboat Springs. Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate but children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Memorial Day Ceremonies

Where? Various Locations

Each year, the Steamboat Springs Cemetery hosts a service in the afternoon on Memorial Day to pay respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Generally, the event draws a sizable crowd and parking can be limited — so attendees are asked to park at the designated transit center at the Stockbridge Multimodal Center and take a bus to the event. In previous years, the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA have joined veterans in placing flags on the graves of service members.

American Legion Bird-Howe Post 189 also hosts a Memorial Day ceremony at Yampa Cemetery. The names of the veterans laid to rest on the grounds will be read, with a similar ceremony taking place in nearby Oak Creek. There have been concerns about the size of the post shrinking in recent years, so community members are encouraged to make the time to pay their respects on Memorial Day.

Women United Spring Social

Where? 801 Lincoln Avenue

Women United is a philanthropic-oriented group of women who are dedicated to advocating for the most vulnerable members of the community. This free community event is set to be hosted at The Steamboat Art Museum on May 30th and is designed to promote rejuvenation and relaxation. At the spring social event, attendees will learn more about self-care practices and delve into insightful presentations on how restful sleep can promote a healthier outlook, as well as the innovations that have been made in neuroscience techniques for stress relief through breath work and sensory strategies.

Guests will be treated to complimentary appetizers and beverages as they have the chance to socialize with speakers and other like-minded community members. The spring social is scheduled for 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM and all community members are welcome. Space is limited, so RSVP as soon as possible to snag a spot!
