Farewell to Another Ski Season

The annual Splashdown Pond Skim contest, the Cardboard Classic race and a free reggae concert from the Wailers marked the end of another ski season as Steamboat Resort closed on Sunday, April 14. Mother Nature was kind to skiers and boarders this winter; snowfall hit 341″ at mid-mountain and 422″ at the summit, with 37 powder days (4″ of fresh snow or more). Longtime locals rode the 30 year old gondola, affectionately known as the ‘Silver Bullet,’ for the last time. A new $15M gondola will be installed this summer, one of several improvements being made to the ski area by owners Alterra Mountain Company. Locals and visitors skied under lights on 85 evenings of night skiing. Steamboat made sure no one missed out on a party with 11 free concerts and 15 firework displays, over a season we will not forget for a while. Until next year!
