There is a saying in Steamboat Springs, better known as the Yampa Valley Curse. As legend has it, once someone has been to the valley, they will always yearn to return. Once you move here, it is impossible to leave. Whether it’s a curse or not, the real reason anyone yearns to return is for the people. For a rural mountain town, the community offers a warm welcome and prides itself on caring for its locals.
Together Apart in Response to COVID-19
When COVID-19 reared its head, the people of Steamboat were ready. Two volunteer organizations were set up and willing to serve. Routt Responds and Helping Routt County are ensuring that those who need help will get it.
“So far, we’ve had limited requests for help, but are prepared for requests to increase as people are expected to stay at home for an extended period of time,” said Ken Mauldin, Group Coordinator for Helping Routt County.
At 7 PM, neighborhoods are alive with the sound of music thanks to a daily community sing-a-long. Posters covered in images of springtime hang from doors and windows to add a message of hope. Banners of thanks wave in the wind as a reminder of gratitude to essential workers and healthcare professionals. Eating out is now via take-out, thanks to the perseverance of local restaurants. A handful of shops will deliver, or like Aspen Botanicals health solutions, will leave a goodie bag for collection.
The New Normal Stays Steamboat Strong
Teachers and students are adapting to online classrooms. Your weekly workout is in the living room but still led by your favorite instructor. Kitchens have become offices and happy hours are virtual gatherings.
Despite the new norms, one thing that remains a constant is the clear mountain air. Cyclists outweigh drivers as winding country roads offer a reprieve from isolation. The Yampa River Core Trail bustles with clusters of walkers who step out in household groups keeping their distances from passersby. The snow-covered backcountry remains a playground for the occasional snowshoers and cross-country skiers.
The constant message of ‘we will get through this’ rings true, in a place where help is always on hand. We will remain Steamboat strong throughout
