Ways to Winterize Your Property

Cooler temperatures and this year’s Indian summer mean its time to winterize our properties. We’re not just talking about stashing summer toys and dusting off our winter gear, but getting a home ready for the impending snowfall.

  • Replace broken or missing roof shingles.
  • Remove debris from gutters.
  • Have chimneys swept to remove any soot buildup and possible bird nests.
  • Protect pipes from freezing. Unscrew hoses and put them into storage. Turn off the shut-off valve for exterior faucets and drain any remaining water.
  • Inspect windows, doors, and exterior walls for gaps. Seal any spaces.
  • Replace furnace filters to prolong the life of your furnace
  • Add insulation & seal off crawl spaces, attics & any unfinished basements.
  • Invest in Programmable thermostats.
  • Reverse ceiling fans to rotate in a clockwise direction, forcing heat downwards.
  • If you plan to leave your property vacant during winter, set the thermostats between 50-55 degrees to avoid pipes freezing.
  • Unless you plan to do your own snow removal, call ahead and get on the books with a professional.
  • Order firewood. There’s nothing worse than trying to stack a pile when the snow is dumping.
